Welcome to the official website for Ethnic Studies in Fresno!
June 11, 2020
As we look upon the horrific and race-based current events and injustices that have taken place in our nation, we first and foremost hope you are doing well under these difficult circumstances and are in good spirits. #blacklivesmatter
The Fresno Ethnic Studies Coalition is a grassroots task force of educators, students, and community members who are dedicated to establishing Ethnic Studies at Fresno Unified School District. Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary study of race, ethnicity, and indigeneity with a focus on the experiences and perspectives of people of color within and beyond the United States. The founders of this coalition are all Ethnic Studies teachers in Fresno Unified School District. When adequately supported, we as Ethnic Studies educators believe the course can empower students and transform communities. However, we are deeply troubled by the lack of district support offered thus far. While we have piloted these courses at school sites across the district, we have gaps in what this class can truly provide for students. As a collective we do not have an established scope & sequence, viable curriculum, and textbooks. We are working as islands unto ourselves, working in complete isolation.
We wanted to personally reach out in partnership to gain your support and begin a positive dialogue on our push for Ethnic Studies. We need community support for this Ethnic Studies movement! Support from members of the community like you are critical to our success, when we approach the school board with our demands.
